Flodesk vs ConvertKit – What’s the Best Option for Your Business?

Looking for an email marketing platform but don’t know which one to choose? Flodesk vs ConvertKit is the main choice many online business owners and creatives face!

On the surface, they both do the same thing: help you put emails in clients’ inboxes! When comparing Flodesk vs Convertkit, you’ll find two email marketing platforms with similar basic features but that are very different to use.

My quick take on the Flodesk vs ConvertKit debate is this: Flodesk is easy to use and makes it easy to create great-looking emails, even if you’re a beginner. ConvertKit is full of advanced features and tools that are perfect for more established business owners who need more out of an email marketing tool.

If you need more information before you decide, keep reading for a closer look at the ins and outs of Flodesk vs ConvertKit!

Flodesk vs ConvertKit Pricing

TLDR take: Flodesk costs less and is more budget-friendly. You’ll pay more for ConvertKit, but you get more advanced features and workflows.

Flodesk pricing

marketing platforms charge different prices, depending on which features you get and the number of subscribers you have, so being able to count on a consistent price is nice!

No matter how many emails you send or subscribers you have, you’ll always pay $38 monthly (or $420 annually) for the Email Plan. (Through my link, you can get a free trial and 50% off your first year, bringing the cost down to $210, or $17.50 per month.)

You’ll get unlimited:

  • Emails
  • Subscribers
  • Forms
  • Landing page forms
  • Workflows
  • Segments

Flodesk also offers a Checkout plan for sales pages, checkout pages, and transactions for another $38 per month ($420 per year), or you can get both Email and Checkout with the Everything plan for $64 per month ($708 per year).

ConvertKit Pricing

It’s free to start using ConvertKit for the first 1,000 subscribers. After that, a sliding pay scale kicks in based on the number of subscribers you have.

Every plan has unlimited:

  • Landing pages
  • Forms
  • Campaigns
  • Audience tagging and segmentation

After your first 1,000 subscribers, there are two pricing tiers:

Creator starts at $29 per month for 300 subscribers and adds on live chat & email support, automation, and an additional team member.

Creator Pro starts at $59 per month for 300 subscribers and includes all of the other features, plus a newsletter referral system, subscriber engagement scoring, and more advanced reporting.
The more subscribers you have, the more ConvertKit will cost each month. For example, at the 3,000 subscriber mark, Creator costs $49 per month, and Pro costs $79 per month.

Flodesk vs ConvertKit Workflows

Here’s the thing about Flodesk’s workflows: they’re amazing for beginners with basic automation needs. Flodesk’s workflow builder allows you to create automations based on specific actions a subscriber takes, like a simple welcome campaign sent at timed intervals after someone signs up for your email list. If you need help getting started, Flodesk comes with pre-made workflow templates.

But once you get to know your way around email marketing and build more campaigns, there might be some pieces of the process you want to automate that Flodesk can’t handle.

ConvertKit Visual Automations

ConvertKit’s Visual Automations have WAY more options for building out email sequences and automation. There are more triggers, events, and actions to choose from when you’re deciding on what happens when for email subscribers.

ConvertKit’s pre-built automations can help you design effective sales funnels. Overall, you can create more complex workflow sequences to automate your email process (which, in turn, saves you a lot of time and headaches!)

Flodesk vs ConvertKit for Email Building

How you build emails in each of these platforms is one of the biggest differences between the two!

The TLDR take: They’re both easy to use, but the results differ. While Flodesk focuses on making it simple to create beautiful emails, ConvertKit’s email builder is more basic.

Building emails in Flodesk

The creators of Flodesk wanted to make it easy for anyone to create high-quality, eye-catching emails – and that’s exactly what you get! You can build emails from scratch or use templates with customizable layouts, colors, and fonts. In the end, you can easily create graphically-driven emails that look like what you’re used to seeing in your own inbox from major brands.

Flodesk is also really easy for beginners to use without a learning curve; most people can figure out the basics and send out their first campaign within a day. The starting templates look professional and polished, and you can easily modify elements with a drag-and-drop builder.

If you’re not a very creative person and having beautiful emails is important to you, Flodesk is the way to go.

Building emails with ConvertKit

Email building in ConvertKit is much more basic, and you won’t have as many built-in styling options. Overall, the email designer is still easy to use, and there are some templates to get you started. But if you want to change things around, you will definitely need to know how to use CSS to code your way into the look you want (or have help from someone who does).

The system itself is intuitive, but it looks more like a basic word processor, and for the most part, ConvertKit’s emails have more of a plain-text look when they arrive in subscribers’ inboxes.

However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing! While simpler emails are less eye-catching, they look more like personal messages to subscribers.

Flodesk vs ConvertKit Analytics

If you want to figure out what’s working (and not working) with your email marketing, you’ll need analytics features to let you know what’s going on once your email hits a subscriber’s inbox.

The TLDR take: Both services have analytics features, but ConvertKit has the deep-dive capability that more established businesses need.

Flodesk analytics

Flodesk’s analytics dashboard is super straightforward, and you can view the basics, like open and click-through rates for each email and workflow. You won’t be able to drill down and see what each user is doing, which links they’re clicking on, and the overall trends of their account growth over time.

Honestly, if you’re a beginner to email marketing, you might not need all of those features just yet, and you’ll be OK with Flodesk’s basic overview style of analytics data.

ConvertKit analytics

If you’re looking to level up your analytics (or already know that you want to see more data), then ConvertKit is for you!

Overall, ConvertKit’s analytics are more robust; you can view open and click-through rates for each individual subscriber, email, and sequence. You can also look at the actions of one subscriber in particular or the in-depth data of total sends, open and click rates, unsubscribes, and errors for every email you send.

Flodesk vs ConvertKit: Which one is right for you?

I hope this deep dive into the features of each one has helped you make your own decision on Flodesk vs ConvertKit. Honestly, both of these services are great options for small business owners! The bottom line is that ConvertKit is better if you need advanced workflows and automation sequences. If your deciding factors are price and creating emails with a high-end designer look, Flodesk is your best bet! You can always change later on as your business grows!
